Robert Downey Jr., star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, almost didn’t reprise his role as Iron Man in “Captain America: Civil War.”anthony russo Brothers

“Avengers: Endgame” co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo sat down with Variety’s Marc Malkin for the second episode of Variety and iHeartMedia’s new film podcast, “The Big Ticket.”

“We had to convince Robert Downey, who was not under contract to do ‘Civil War,’ to do that movie and to actually play a bad guy,” Joe Russo said.

So how do you get one of the world’s highest-paid actors to appear in a movie he didn’t sign up for?

“A lot of meetings in Malibu,” Anthony Russo said.

“You say, ‘Look, we’re going to try and do something really risky here. We want to deconstruct, we want to inject some edge and some tension into these stories.’ And he has to keep telling these stories, so he wants to play something compelling,” Joe said. “So when you say to him, ‘Hey, you get to be a villain and it’s going to make your next few movies a lot more interesting and give you more to play,’ it’s not that hard to sell.”anthony russo Brothers

Even though it wasn’t an official “Avengers” movie, 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War” featured most of the superheroes divided over whether to register the team with the United Nations. Captain America and Iron Man led the two opposing sides against each other in a climactic battle that left the former teammates not on speaking terms when the dust cleared. The film helped set up “Avengers: Endgame,” which is believed to be the Russos’ final movie with Marvel.anthony russo Brothers

“We’ve only taken it one at a time, honestly, except for ‘Infinity War.’ We don’t have any plans to do any more movies with Marvel. Now, we love Marvel — we couldn’t love them more. Our working experience on these films have been among the greatest in our careers. I wouldn’t be surprised if somewhere down the line we end up doing something when we find the right story. But right now, this is it,” Anthony said.anthony russo Brothers

Here’s how they got their start

Chances are, you only learned the Russos names through press for Infinity War and Endgame. But they’ve been in show biz a lot longer than that, and you’re probably familiar with their work — you just didn’t know they were behind it.

The two have worked as a team (as they usually do) on TV for many years. They directed (both individually and together) many episodes of the original run of Arrested Development, as well as other series like Community and Happy Endings. Their first film two films were comedies Welcome to Collinwood (which they also wrote) and You, Me and Dupree.anthony russo Brothers

This is what the Russos have done in the MCU
Having only directed two films at this point, the Russos were sought out by Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They did such an incredible job on the film that they were offered more gigs: They followed this up with Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and now Endgame.
Some of the other Russos may look familiar

As we said, Russo productions are an event for the family, and that’s been the case for some time now. According to IMDb, their sister, Angela Russo-Otstot has worked with her brothers are several times, acting in Welcome to Collinwood, two episodes of Arrested Development, and in The Winter Soldier. She is also a writer and producer in her own right, working on shows like The Shield and V.

The Russos have also included their other family members in their films here and there. Sophia Russo, who is the daughter not pictured in the Instagram photo, played Teenage Girl in Civil War. Her sister, Ava, has been seen in the Endgame trailers as the daughter of Hawkeye (Clint Barton). And Anthony’s wife, Ann, is an actress and was in both Winter Soldier and Civil War.anthony russo Brothers
